In-Person vs. Online Payments

Understand the differences between physical and online payment acceptance.

Many businesses accept payments in more than one place. In-person and online payments share the same goal, but they work a little differently.

In-person payments

In-person payments happen at a physical location or on the go, typically using a terminal or mobile device. The card or digital wallet is presented to the device at checkout.

Online payments

Online payments happen through a website or digital platform. The customer enters payment details in a checkout page, and the payment is processed through an online gateway.

Things to consider

  • Where your customers prefer to pay.
  • The equipment or integration each channel needs.
  • How sales from different channels are reported together.
  • Security and data-handling requirements for each channel.
